Specialist note

This Cartier Oval Maxi is one of the most distinctive watches ever sold by the company. They possess incredible power and visual interest on the wrist. This wristwatch with its daring design pays tribute to the era of the mid-20th Century in London, a time of modern and inspirational innovations. With a slender case, fine Roman numerals and large unusual shape for the times, it is an extremely attractive and fine example of unique watchmaking and ongoing research suggests that Audemars Piguet may have made the entire watch and not just the movement.

This particular example dates to circa 1970 where Audemars Piguet made it for the American market. It was likely originally shipped to Cartier in New York and sold there. It is possible that Audemars Piguet may have accepted the order from Cartier in order to finance important projects, such as the development of the Royal Oak.

The Oval Maxi models made by Audemars Piguet for the American market differ slightly from the Oval Maxi examples made by Jaeger-LeCoultre for the London market. In particular, the American models are wider and, in general, are of greater interest to collectors.

The present watch offers a rare opportunity to find an American Oval Maxi in outstanding condition with no sign of polishing or damage to the dial.
