Specialist note
Henry Vane, 4th Earl of Darlington and 2nd Duke of Cleveland M.P., K.G. (1788-1864) succeeded his father, the 1st Duke in 1842. He married Lady Sophia (d.1859), eldest daughter of the 4th Earl of Powlett, in 1809. He was educated at Christ Church College, Oxford and was a Whig M.P. between 1812 and 1842. He also served in the army from 1815 and by 1863 rose to the rank of General. In 1842, the same year as the present lot, he was created a Knight of the Garter.
