The present work is a study for the oil, The Bear Gates, Peebles, 1961, which depicts Traquair House in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. One of Scotland's oldest inhabited houses, Traquair House has welcomed many famous guests, including Alexander I, Mary Queen of Scots and James VI of Scotland (James I of England).
