“The female impersonators didn’t care if they were contributing anything to fine art: for a fee, they gladly dropped by the Factory to pose, all decked out in their extravagant wigs, wide-brimmed hats, or simple bandannas. In a perverse way, these portraits demonstrate Warhol’s lingering egalitarianism, his willingness to treat street people with as much dignity and style as his moneyed clients.”
