Specialist note
The present models, often attributed to Mathurin Moreau, represent Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots (Mary Stuart) and may have been directly inspired by a series known as the ‘Reines de France et Femmes illustrées’. Commissioned by Louis-Philippe for the Jardin du Luxemburg and executed circa 1847/48, the series was completed by various artists, including Jean-Jacques Feuchère. Another pair of this model was sold at Christie's, London, 6 March 2014, lot 19 (£35,000).
