Specialist note

Takamatsu’s “Oneness” series occurred during the years 1969-1971 and comprised a number of smaller series. One of these was a series of works using rectangular blocks of various materials such as wood, brick or marble which were broken into small pieces and then put back into the original framework from which the material originated. He also made a number of two-dimensional works using a similar motif of fragmented pieces of paper. In this work, “Oneness of Iron”, seemly broken pieces of the material are again returned to the cavity created by their extraction. Through these works, Takamatsu was challenging the Minimalist form.
