C.A. Lion Cachet for E.J. van Wisselingh & Co, circa 1903
C.A. Lion Cachet designed the easel for the Rembrandt-portefeuille published on the occasion of an extensive exhibition on Rembrandt in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The cover of the Rembrandt-portefeuille was designed by Lion Cachet.
A comparable but not as elaborate easel was sold in these rooms 16 November 2004, lot 85. The E.J. van Wisselingh & Co, gallery was founded in 1838, by the 1900’s there was a gallery in London and one in Amsterdam selling paintings by the most important Dutch and French artists of the 19th and early 20th century. Wisselingh sold works by amongst others Matthijs Maris, Marius Bauer, George Hendrik Breitner, Willem Witsen en Willem de Zwart as well as works by Gustave Courbet, Daumier and Jongkind. In 1898 Wisselingh founded a workshop producing furniture and complete interiors mainly catering to an Amsterdam clientele. Three artists worked in the Wisselingh workshop: Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof, C.A. Lion Cachet and Theo Nieuwenhuis. Their works of art are amongst the finest that were made in Holland in the art nouveau and Jugendstil style. The three artists were very close and collaborated on several projects together over a period of many years.
