in a composition frame, probably designed by Robert Adam, made for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, for Luton Park, Bedfordshire

John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792), framed c. 1772/4 to be hung at Luton Park, possibly over one of the chimneys in the Saloon where Reynolds' portraits of the 3rd Earl and his wife were subsequently placed, and by descent to his son,
John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute (1744-1814), Luton Hoo, where recorded in the inventories of 1799, p. 41 (Saloon), and 1822, no. 79 (Saloon), and by descent to,
John Crichton-Stuart, 6th Marquess of Bute (1933-1993); (†) Christie's, London, 9 December 1994, lot 343 (£23,000), when acquired by the present owner.
