Duncan McFarlane (1834-1871)

The wooden barque Renown was built at Whitby in 1856 and first owned by B. Pearson of the same port. After starting her career in the Ceylon trade, she was sold to E. Hancock of Falmouth in the early 1860s who transferred her first onto the West Indian run and then to the Mediterranean. The fact that she is shown here wearing the French tricolour - albeit mistakenly reversed – at her fore-masthead suggests she was making either for the French islands in the Caribbean or to France itself. She disappears from record around 1875.
