A REGENCY EBONISED SOFA
CIRCA 1810, PROBABLY BY GILLOWS
Of small proportions, re-upholstered in cream linen, the reeded frame with patera-carved arm terminals, the rear seat rail with early 19th century pencil inscription "Marques of Bath" [sic]
60 in. (153 cm.) wide

Very likely supplied to Thomas, 2nd Marquess of Bath by Gillows of London and Lancaster circa 1808/1809.

Specialist note

The reeded arm-scrolls, carved paterae and gadroon-capped toupie feet all appear in Gillows' General Sketch Book of 1810. Two years before, in 1808/1809, Gillows supplied furniture to the Marquess of Bath for Longleat and his house in Grosvenor Square totalling £626. It is likely the present sofa formed part of that commission.
