Specialist note

An almost identical composition, octagonal, signed and dated 'G. denis / 1642', was offered with Christie's, Amsterdam, 5 September 2007, lot 82. The artist G. Denis is unknown, but he was likely to have been inspired by Gerard Terborch's painting in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich or one of its contemporary copies. A second copy is listed as being in St. Pieters- en Bloklands-Gasthuizen, Amersfoort.
