Lot 78 The Art of The Box
This exquisite group of hard stone, semi-precious and gold mounted boxes are nearly all marked or can be attributed to the Parisian jewellery house Chaumet. In the 1980s, René Morin, the artistic director, used his varied influences to promote the resurgence of precious objects alongside the jewellery the company was famous for. Having joined Chaumet in 1962, Morin created a bull’s head from a block of lapis lazuli, and it is likely these boxes were produced in a similar vein for private collector. Some applied with jewelled mounts or veneered in sumptuous and unusual agates and jaspers, these boxes are works of art in their own right.
