Tom Lovell (1909-1997)

Tom Lovell wrote of The Raven Followers, “The Comanches believed that the ravens were buffalo pointers. These birds are carrion eaters and would also eat bugs on the hides of the animals. When a raven circled over the camp cawing ‘he was telling the people where the herd is, he will fly off and show the way,’ according to a comanche informant. These scouts have been led in a such a way to a herd. They will note it’s location and movement and will report back to the tribe. A communal hunt will then be organized.” (on a note affixed to the backing board of the present work)
