Specialist note
Gaining national recognition for his illustrations of the Spanish-American War for publications such as Scribner's and Harper's, Howard Chandler Christy became best known for 'The Christy Girl,' his version of the ideal woman--an aristocratic, beautiful American with self-confidence--who often featured in his illustrations and World War I recruitment posters. In the present work, 'The Christy Girl' is depicted as an allegory of the Greek-American alliance. The work is likely one of Christy's pro bono humanitarian works that he would gift to philanthropic organizations.
