The chocolate brown field with an overall design of tan floral rosettes around a central diaper-shaped medallion containing a large floral bouquet, with four similar large floral bouquets to each corner of the field, surrounded by floral garlands, set within a pale yellow floral meander stripe, even overall wear, scattered small repairs and repiling, the main border missing, backed

Specialist note

A carpet of the same design but with an ivory and pale lemon yellow field was woven for the State Bedroom at Blickling Hall, Norfolk in 1765-70 (Sarah B. Sherrill, Carpets and Rugs of Europe and America, New York, 1995, p.197). The note accompanying the illustration of the Blickling Hall Axminster in Sarah B. Sherill's book makes reference to the present carpet.
