A FRENCH BONE AND IVORY MIRROR

The northern French town of Dieppe is synonymous with this type of carved bone and ivory furniture, particularly mirrors. A great number of romantically inspired Renaissance-style ornamental mirrors were produced at a number of small ateliers there during the second half of the 19th century. This mirror is typical of the local style, with its rich carving and inclusion of heraldic motifs.
The coat-of-arms is in part an approximation of the arms of Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany which was historically important as the seat of the Electors of Saxony, including August II ‘the Strong’, Elector of Saxony and his Order of the White Eagle.
