black chalk, brush and brown and grey wash, brown ink and partially graphite framing lines, watermark Strasburg lily and countermark cross with letters IHS (name of Jesus)

Specialist note

According to the inscription on the verso, this drawing shows a street near the Porta Paolo, called Ostiense, by the Aurelian wall.
A drawing by Herman van Swanevelt (1603/4-1655) showing the same composition, with the house on the hill on the right not yet in ruins, is in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (inv. MAS 2045; A.C. Steland, Herman van Swanevelt, I-II, Petersberg, 2010, no. Z 2.83, fig. Z 71).
