Specialist note

Van Goyen was a pupil of Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630) until 1618 when Esaias left Haarlem and moved to The Hague. The drawings made by van Goyen between 1617 and 1620 show the influence of his master in both subject matter and style. The present drawing with its delicate penwork can be compared, for example, to van de Velde's Landscape with shepherds and their flock and travellers on a road near a house, dated 1619, previously in the I.Q. van Regteren Altena collection and sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 December 2014, lot 142 (G.S. Keyes, Esaias van de Velde 1587-1630, Doornspijk, 1984, no. D 136, pl. 88). It may also be compared to another drawing by van de Velde, A river landscape with a shepherd driving sheep up a rise towards houses, which is dated 1620 (lot 201 in the present sale).
