The Oostpoort of the town of Delft, with a mill
black chalk, grey wash, brown ink framing lines
10.6 x 16.9 cm.

with J.H.J. Mellaart, London; from whom purchased by I.Q. van Regteren Altena in April 1927 for 100 guilders (Inventory book: '300. t. van Goyen Oostpoort Delft').

Specialist note

Jan van Goyen used this motif, with some adjustments, in at least two paintings dating from 1644 and 1645 (H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen: 1596-1656: ein Oeuvreverzeichnis: Katalog der Gemälde, Amsterdam. 1973, nos. 668, 676). A less sketchy and slightly bigger drawing showing the Oostpoort without the windmill is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. 3418; H.-U. Beck, op. cit., no. 748).

The Oostpoort was built around 1400 and, with its fortifications and spires, is a rare survivor from Delft's medieval period.
