Specialist note

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue critique of Pierre-Auguste Renoir being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute established from the archives of François Daulte, Durand-Ruel, Venturi, Vollard and Wildenstein.

Ambroise Vollard commissioned Pierre-Auguste Renoir to paint a portrait of his friend, Madame de Galéa bordered by a trompe l'oeil garland held by putti. The project was never fully realized, and only the upper portion of the canvas was painted. The present work is the leftmost section of the frieze.
