A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD OPEN ARMCHAIRS

These saloon chairs are designed in the 'French' style, and with their characteristic inverted baluster legs and scrolled arms jointed into the tops of the legs they relate to the work of the London firm of Mayhew & Ince. Similar features are found on a pair of beechwood armchairs, sold Christie's New York, 23 April 1988, lot 130, described as being nearly identical to a set of six at Syon House, Middlesex, and illustrated in R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, revd. ed. (1954), p. 290, fig. 203.
