Jean-Baptiste Fossin (1786-1848) worked as head of workshop for Etienne Nitot who was the official jeweler to Emperor Napolean. At the fall of the French Empire in 1815, Nitot's son sold the business to Fossin. The firm became one of the premier jewelry houses of its day. Jean-Baptiste Fossin's son Jules joined his father in 1830 and they were appointed Joailliers du Roi by King Louis-Philippe. Fossin & Fils later became the jewelry house Chaumet located at 12, Place Vendome.
