Specialist note

Born in Chelsea, London, Maitland was a pupil of Theodore Rousel. In 1888 he became a member of the New English Art Club and exhibited with the London Impressionists in 1889. Maitland primarily focused on scenes in Kensington and Chelsea, illustrating the influence of Whistler, another local resident.
