Specialist note

Romeyn visited Italy in 1650-51 but continued painting and drawing Italian subjects once back in Holland, no doubt basing these works on sketches made during that trip. Two other drawings dated 1693, also representing the Colosseum and of almost identical dimensions, are in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (Plomp, op. cit, nos. 404-5).
