Anthonie Waterloo (Lille 1609-1690 Utrecht)
A man and a dog on a path in a wooded pastoral landscape
with inscription 'Gerkhusen [...] Graafsschap Bentem' (verso), with further inscription 'Girkhausen (Westf.)? ("Gerkhusen")' and with initials 'AW' (verso)
black chalk, pen and grey ink, grey wash, brown ink framing lines
6 3/8 x 7½ in. (16.3 x 19.1 cm.)

Note du spécialiste

According the inscriptions, verso, this could have been drawn near Bentheim, perhaps at Gildehaus, although the additional mention of 'Gerkhausen' (presumably Girkhausen in Westphalia) makes the exact location unclear. Waterloo probably executed this drawing while he was travelling in Northern Germany (see next lot).
