Specialist note
Similar studies (see for example: M.S. Robinson, Van de Velde Drawings: A catalogue of drawings in the National Maritime Museum, Cambrige, 1958, I, nos. 711 and 742, pls. 160 and 168) are known by Willem van de Velde II which, according to the inscriptions found on some of them, were used to illustrate drawing lessons that he gave to his son, Willem van de Velde III (1667-after 1708). This sheet may have been made for the same purpose and was certainly drawn after the artist's return from his journey in the Mediterranean around 1693.
