Specialist note

Executed when the artist was only thirteen years old, this charming study seems to have been observed from life. The infant being briskly cleaned and changed by his nurse or mother is probably ter Borch's one-year-old half-brother Mattheijs. Despite the artist's youth the figures are drawn with swift, energetic strokes which give the drawing a tantalising sense of movement.
