Flemish School, early 16th Century

The presence of a sketched figure of an angel in the central right-hand study of a house suggests that these may have been conceived as settings for a religious subject. Jeroen Giltaij in the 1976-77 suggested that the drawing was originally part of a sketchbook of which no other surviving sheet is known and which must have been comparable to the Errera sketchbook in Brussels, generally dated circa 1530-1540. Giltaij added that the author of the present drawing could be an artist in the circle of Joachim Patinir (c. 1480-1524).
