Jean Baptiste Boudard was born in Paris but, having won the Prix de Rome in 1732, spent much of his career in Rome and Parma.
The present bust is comparable to two known marble busts by Boudard of Duke Philip of Bourbon-Parma in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Galleria Nazionale di Parma, in the treatment of the hair and curls, and in the engaged movement of the sitter's head.
