QI BAISHI (1863-1957)
Lot 1739 FORMERLY IN THE COLLECTION OF WU YUNZHAI

Wu Yunzhai (1886-1962) was a noted financier and collector. Born in Zhenjiang, he attended the Nanyang Public School in Shanghai with Li Shutong (Hong Yi, 1880-1942) and Qian Xinzhi (1885-1958), and later studied business at Waseda University in Japan. While working at the Jincheng Bank in Shanghai, Wu met Li Zulai, a close friend of Zhang Daqian, who introduced him to various important artists. Two other works by Hua Yan and Huang Ding from the same collection will be offered in our Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale on 25 November 2014, Lots 1077-1078.
