MARK OF ROBERT GARRARD, LONDON, 1840
Shaped circular and melon-fluted on four pierced and cast scroll feet, the sides cast with garlands of wildflowers on a matted ground and applied with a coat-of-arms to each side, with openwork scroll side-handles, detachable spirally-fluted cover with flower bud finial, silver liner, all upon a shaped-oval fluted stand engraved with three crests below a coronet; marked underneath, inside cover, liner, underneath stand and on finial

The arms are those of Rothschild impaling Montefiore for Sir Anthony Nathan de Rothschild (1810-1876) and his wife Louise (1821-1910), daughter of Abraham Montefiore, who he married in 1840.

Specialist note

Sir Anthony Nathan de Rothschild (1810-1876) was appointed privy councillor of commerce to the king of Prussia in 1844. He inherited his father’s title of Baron de Rothschild of the Austrian Empire in 1847. In 1858 he succeeded his brother Lionel as Austrian consul in London and he was created 1st Baronet de Rothschild, of Tring Park in 1885.

His wife Louise (1821-1910), daughter of Abraham Montefiore, was an activist and leading figure in the Jewish community. She was president of the Jewish Ladies' Benevolent Loan and Visiting Society. As a young girl, she developed her own rigorous education plan. In this spirit, she later directed girls' education at the London Jews' Free School.
