Specialist note

The present work is related to Gari Melchers's Maternity (1895) in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. The Gari Melchers archives contain a photograph of an earlier version of The Young Mother in which the child has dark hair and faces towards the left. According to Joanna Catron, Melchers likely repainted the work circa 1907 to include the lovely blonde child.

We are grateful to Joanna Catron for confirming the authenticity of this lot.
