Modelled with an Arab horse in pursuit of an ostrich, on a naturalistic base with cast signature 'DUBUCAND'
14 in. (36 cm.) high; 16 in. (41 cm.) wide

Both groups removed from Wilmington Manor, Kent, home of Sir Clarence Smith (1849-1941), who was a liberal MP under Gladstone, Deputy Lieutenant of the County of the City of London, founder of both the Eagle Star Insurance company and Smith Rice stockbrokers. Thence by descent.

Specialist note

Dubucand was a pupil under the renowned Animalier sculptor Barye and produced many highly realistic models of animals throughout his career. His careful attention to detail and skillful modelling of animals reflected Barye's tutelage, however he is perhaps best known for his work depicting the people and animals of North Africa and the Middle East. The original model of the present bronze was exhibited at the Salon in 1876.
