Specialist note

With its canvas edged in bold red, a harmonious palette of magnificent blue tone fills the vast surface of Louis Eisner’s Untitled, 2011. From the deep aquamarine in each outer corner, the colour gradually lightens towards the centre, merging into a delicate sky blue. The work possesses a meditative quality, as the subtle blending of colour draws the viewer’s eye into Eisner’s deep blue void, evoking a sense of peace and calm. Scratches and inflections briefly interrupt the surface like waves upon a calm sea, emphasising the expressive trace of the artist’s hand. In much of his work, Eisner has engaged with the colour blue, employing it in many different textures, materials and shades to explore its formal and emotive qualities. His most recent works have depicted hyper-realistic water droplets, in saturated blue hues, extending the explorations of the colour and surface texture we see in the present work. Born in 1988, Eisner was educated at Columbia University, and has since worked closely with the Still House Group, a cutting-edge collective of young artists in New York founded by Isaac Brest and Alex Perweiler.
