Specialist note

John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners (1819), is among the few who established a business in London dedicated to making chess sets at the end of 18th century as the game rose in popularity. Calvert died in 1825, but the business was continued by his widow, Dorothy, until 1836.
