Hercule-Philippe-Étienne de Baschi, Count of Cayla (1747-1826) in uniform, in silver-embroidered blue coat with silver epaulette, fur trim, white waistcoat and black stock, wearing the badge of the Royal French Military Order of St Louis
on ivory
oval, 3 3/8 in. (85 mm.) high, gilt-metal mount

The moiré silk peppermint reverse with trade label for Romain Barillier, Dorure, Encadrements, Papeterie, Paris.

Christie's, Geneva, 17 November 1992, lot 467 (unillustrated, the sitter unknown, then in a gilt-wood frame).

Specialist note

The sitter was a Marshall of France in the Royalist army and was made a Peer of France by King Louis XVIII.
