Three Black Fur Yarisaya
Edo period (19th century)
Comprising three bearskin-clad saya [scabbards] for yari [thrusting spears], one for the jumonji [figure ‘ten’] type of yari with two transverse blades in addition to the central blade, and two for single-bladed yari, all mounted on preservation stands
12.5cm., 16.5cm. and 22.5cm. high (excluding stands)

Such decorative saya were made to give an impressive effect when carried by a number of men marching in daimyo processions to and from the capital Edo.
