Abdul Hadi El-Gazzar (Egyptian, 1925-1965)

The second portrait by El-Gazzar from the Farsi Collection depicts in blue hues and cool undertones a younger figure, named Gratzella. The portrait of the young girl has been completed in shades of blue, white and black as she is shown wearing a thin and creased white turtleneck sweater. Her hair is thick and black, worn in a bob that is framing her delicate, cherubic face. She has plump, pink cheeks and small lips and dark eyes that are intense in their gaze. The child's skin appears as light as her clothing and the white and blue undertones of her skin and clothing almost blend with the pale blue background, if not for the subtle brushstrokes that form the outline of the girl's sweater and the black paint that forms her hair. Additionally, the composed demeanor of the child complements the cool undertones, suggests her European origins and her features come together to create an overall harmonious work.
