AFTER HIPPOLYTE HEIZLER, CIRCA 1880
Each with relief cast frieze modelled with panthers and stylised foliage, signed 'HEIZLER', flanked by swan neck handles, on stepped plinth bases raised on lion paw feet, later fitted for electricity

Specialist note

The animal sculptor Hippolyte Heizler (1828-1871) studied under Antoine-Louis Barye. He worked on various monumental projects in Paris including the Louvre and the Opera. He was commissioned by Sultan Abdulaziz for a sculpture of a Royal Tiger, now in the Palace Beylerbeyi, Instanbul, and in 1867 modelled a group of dogs as a diplomatic present for the Czar of Russia.

A single by Heizler was sold Bonham's London 10 July 2014, lot 94.
