This group of models would probably have been made to demonstrate how horses' teeth age, the effects of wind-sucking and crib-biting, and also to show the fraudulent methods used to make horses seem older or younger than their actual age.
While earlier and contemporary anatomical models were made of wax, Dr Auzoux's mixture of papier mache, cork, clay, paper and glue proved far more durable, as well as cheaper.
