Specialist note

'During the preparations from the lithographic series Eccentric Polygons however, Stella's straightforward approach to both the image and the process came more complex. In this new series he continued to draw on plates with crayon, but each print was now a record of printings from several plates. Over-printings of different colors and varied crayon renderings resulted in a new range of color saturations and effects. Stella's handling of the lithographic medium grew more exacting and more explicitly additive. Patience was now required to consider the possible inter-relations of numerous printing matrices; varying combinations of overlaid inks and textures offered any number of resolutions. The Eccentric Polygons series was a breakthrough for Stella as a printmaker.'
