A GEORGE III AMARILLO, MAHOGANY AND ZEBRAWOOD-CROSSBANDED PEMBROKE TABLE

A pembroke table with a similar exotic amarillo twin-flap top and of similar proportions, though earlier in style, was probably supplied to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries for Dumfries House, Ayrshire, circa 1759, possibly by Thomas Chippendale (see Christie's London sale catalogue, 12 July 2007, Dumfries House: A Chippendale Commission, vol. I, lot 33). Chippendale is known to have employed exotic woods in the manufacture of everyday furniture, such as 'pidgeon' wood, 'Guadalupe Wood', 'Nutmeg' wood and 'Allegozant' (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, pp. 159, 183 and 280).
