Specialist note
Reference 6238 is the last "tradition" Rolex chronograph from the Oyster family, and is known as the "Pre-Daytona". It is the last model featuring a tachometer scale on the dial, which was moved to the bezel with the introduction of the new Daytona series. The new design of the Daytona allowed for better legibility and more space for dial design. However, the "Pre-Daytona" models will always be seen as a classic sport watch, and enjoys enormous popularity due to its rarity and historical significance within the company's history.
In production only from approximately 1962 to 1967, the reference 6238 is a must-have for any Rolex collector. It was made predominantly in stainless steel with very few examples in gold. Whereas the European and Asian markets were presented with the 18k gold version, examples like the present one, cased in 14k gold, were usually reserved for the North American market. The present watch is a fine example of a reference 6238, with a very sporty yet classic and subtle design, easily wearable on any occasion.
Reference 6238 is illustrated and described in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by John Goldberger, pp. 128-137 and I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 278-291.
