Cylindrical and on circular spreading foot, the lower body chased with acanthus, the cover similarly chased with bud finial, engraved with inscription, marked near handle and on cover bezel

Arthur Vesey Meade, 5th Earl of Clanwilliam MC (1873-1953) was the second, but eldest surviving, son of Admiral of the Fleet Richard Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam (1832-1907), and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Arthur Kennedy GCMG CB. This gift was most likely presented to his godson whilst Meade was serving with the 30th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, in the Second Boer War, in which he was severely wounded. He returned to England in 1904 and succeeded his father as Earl of Clanwilliam in 1907. He came out of retirement between 1915-1919, serving his regiment with distinction in France.
