Ernest Augustus I (1771-1851), Duke of Cumberland and later King of Hanover (1837-1851), in Hanoverian Guard Hussar's uniform, wearing a red-lined cloak, the sash and breast Star of the Royal Hanoverian Order of St George and other badges; architectural background
signed and dated on backing card, 'A. Schäfer / October 1842.'
on ivory
oval, 3.7/8 in. (97 mm.) high, in rectangular ormolu frame with laurel border and foliate spandrels, surmounted by a crown, the reverse engraved, 'ERNEST AUGUSTUS / Duke of Cumberland / and / King of Hanover'

Possibly given by Ernest Augustus I, Duke of Cumberland and later King of Hanover to Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) and by descent.
