With a frieze drawer on turned tapering legs and brass castors, the top with a brass plaque inscribed ' THE TABLE USED BY / HER MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA / AT THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE / CRIMEAN MEDALS / ON THE PARADE OF THE HORSE GUARDS / MAY 18th 1855.'

Specialist note

The Crimea medal (for Lord Raglan's own medal see lot 50) was instituted by Queen Victoria in December 1854, after the battles of Alma and Inkermann. Lord Raglan received a despatch from the Duke of Newcastle, as Secretary of State for War, on 2 December 1854, to that effect. This table was reputedly that used by the Queen on 18 May 1855 - the first ceremony for the presentation of the medal to veterans of the campaign, who had returned before the conclusion of the war.
