A paper label on the reverse is typed 'Major Arthur Fitzroy Somerset / Captain Grenadier Guards / Military Secretary to the governor / General of India 1845 / Died of wounds received at the Battle / of Ferozeshah on Xmas Day xxxx 1845 / The battle was fought on the 22nd of December / Painted in India by a native artist'

Specialist note

The Hon. Arthur FitzRoy Somerset was the eldest son of Lord FitzRoy Somerset, and his wife Lady Emily, née Wellesely-Pole. He was a Major in the Grenadier Guards fighting in India. He distinguished himself at the battle of Maharajpoor (see lots 87 & 88), and was fatally wounded at the battle of Ferozeshah in 1845.
