The lid depicting the Duke of Wellington, containing a selection of various hard stones and a handwritten note dated 1878 and inscribed Mosaics from the Mosque of St. Sophia at Constantinople. Sent by Granville

The stones probably sent to Cefntilla by Granville William Richard Somerset (1862-1901), third son of Richard, 2nd Baron Raglan.

Specialist note

Granville Somerset, third son of the 2nd Lord Raglan and younger brother to the 3rd Lord Raglan, was a major and honorary lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) and a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He married Malvina Charlotte MacGregor, daughter of Rear-Admiral Sir Malcolm MacGregor, in 1892. These stones were presumably sent back to Cefntilla by him from Constantinople.
