English School, early 19th Century
Portrait of General Alava, K.C.B., (1771-1843), full-length, seated, in a great coat and cap, a book and a walking stick in his hands, crutches and books by his side
watercolour heightened with bodycolour on paper
8½ x 11 in. (21.5 x 27.9 cm.)

Given by the Rt. Hon. Charles Arbuthnot (1767-1850) to Lord FitzRoy Somerset.

Note du spécialiste

General Don Miguel Alava was severely wounded during the Peninsular War at the battle of Orthez, 27 February 1814. This depiction of him almost certainly shows him recovering from his wounds.
