Illustrated with Lucas Cranach’s fine series of Apocalypse woodcuts, commissioned for the first edition of Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible in September 1522. Some of the cuts were immediately modified to dampened their anti-papist iconography, for instance, the Harlot of Babylon was first depicted wearing the papal triple crown, which was modified to a single crowd in subsequent uses (here, fo. 98).
